Environment – Emma Loftus

Hello,

My name is Emma. I’m from South Africa and before coming to Oxford I lived a wonderful hippie existence in Cape Town. I’m passionate about environmental issues and Merton and I hope to have a very happy year helping Merton to find its green soul. As Environmental Rep I liaise with college about the environmental issues that are important to you. Issues at Merton that are near and dear to my heart include electricity consumption, ethical consumerism, recycling and vegetarian food. Jess, my lovely teammate, and I want to have lots of awareness raising and action events and would love to have as many people on our team as possible. If you have an environmentalist side please get in touch.

I am studying an MPhil in Archaeology and my interests are palaeoenvironments, hunter-gatherers and the evolution of modern humans.

With Emma, we bring a taste of Africa to Merton MCR! Coming from Namibia and South Africa it takes a while to acclimatize to the English weather, so we thought we would take you all outdoors to see what its about. I’m supporting Emma as Environmental Rep, as we share our interest in people and the environment and work well as a team.

I’m studying a DPhil in Zoology, looking at ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change. I hope to offer some support in moving the college to reducing is carbon consumption and ecological impact. Please support us fighting the good fight through simple everyday habits in the college like switching off your heater when you are not in the room, throwing recyclables in the blue bins in your rooms, and loading up information about goods you may want to trade in when you leave college. There is much more to do than these simple actions, so please email us with any suggestions you may have for activities or related initiatives you want the MCR to support.

Jess
