Associates of the MCR
If you are an unattached researcher in Oxford, a former Merton student, or the domestic partner of a current Merton student, you may be eligible to apply to be an Associate of the MCR.
Associates in Category A are entitled to four meals per week in Hall (including no more than two dinners), and to make use of the MCR, the College Bar, and the sporting facilities. They are not entitled to College accommodation or to use College computing facilities or libraries. The subscription is £40 per term. This is reserved for academic affiliates of Merton, doing research in Oxford at a senior level (e.g. postdoctoral researchers), but who are not reading for Oxford degrees nor members of another college. Endorsement by a Fellow of the College is required.
Associates in Category B may use the MCR and sporting facilities. They can attend MCR functions, but are not entitled to College accommodation or to use College computing facilities or libraries. The subscription is £20 per term. This category is restricted to (a) the domestic partners of current Merton students (so long as both are resident in Oxford), and (b) former Merton students (who left within 5 years) who are resident in Oxford and engaged on a course of study at any university.
Any queries regarding eligibility or the nature of being an Associate should, in the first instance, be directed to the MCR President.
It should be noted that MCR Associates are not members of the MCR, and may not stand or vote in Executive elections, or vote in Common Room meetings (although they are welcome to attend). They may, however, stand for election to the Non-Executive Committee.
Applications: Applications will be considered by the Dean of Graduates and the President of the Middle Common Room. Deadlines are set before the start of each term. Please refer to the College website for the latest information, and the application form. Applications (including Fellow’s endorsement for Category A) must be submitted on time, and via the correct method.
Renewal: Associate status of the MCR is granted for up to one academic year. (Those applying in Hilary or Trinity terms, if successful, will be granted Association for the remainder of that academic year.) All Associates must apply to renew their status before the deadline at the start of Michaelmas Term in each academic year. No Associate shall continue as such for more than five years in total.
