Merton MCR Freshers 2011

And we are back…

Congratulations one and all, you have been accepted as a graduate student at Merton College Oxford.   Welcome to the Merton MCR!  You should be receiving quite a few e-mails from college in the coming weeks, including one containing the freshers week timetable and guides to your first few weeks at Merton.  The committee have been hard at work planning your arrival and it is sure to be an epic week!

Our wonderful Social Secs – Christophe and Pauline are trying to arrange to have a number of current Grads around to help you all with anything you may need on the day you arrive.   But if you have any questions before you arrive please feel free to contact myself or anyone of the committee.  If you happen to be already in Oxford and want to get involved with our summer social events, drop us an e-mail and we will keep you updated with what’s going on in the holidays.

We will be updating the website in the coming days, so look out for even more information on the coming term and your MCR.

Can’t wait to meet you all,

:)

Stephanie

Merton College Music Society Open Concert

Message from Eddie about tonight’s MCMS event…

Hey everyone,

Don’t forget to come to the Mure Room in Merton College at 6pm tonight for our open concert. Even if you haven’t got in touch, feel free to turn up with a short piece or song and I’ll see if I can fit you in. Listeners can expect an exciting and varied concert. It will finish in time for formal hall, and as always there’ll be some time afterwards to enjoy free wine/juice and snacks whilst chatting to fellow listeners and members of the Merton College Music Society committee.

See you there!!

Eddie

Socials Secs Massive Drought!

Hello all,

I’m high-jacking the blog to tell you about my little attempt to raise money for the Down Syndrome Association…

I am giving up alcohol for a MONTH!!! Yes that’s a full 28days with out a single drop of alcohol…

Now you may say…well that isn’t a very social thing to do is it!?? My reasons are three fold…firstly to raise money for charity, secondly to save my liver from almost certain destruction and thirdly to highlight that is still possible to be social and enjoy events without the need to rely on alcohol.

Please support my effort! – http://www.justgiving.com/massivedrought2

Merton College Music Society Concert

This Thursday evening (28th October) at 6pm Caroline George and Tim Coleman will present an alto and tenor duet recital with a varied programme, ranging from Bach to Beautiful South.

Caroline and Tim are both undergraduates at Merton and both sing in the Chapel choir. They did a concert together last year which I thoroughly enjoyed and I would certainly recommend coming along this time. There will be wine and soft drinks available after the performance and the event will finish in plenty of time to get to Formal Hall. Even if you’re not booked into Hall, do come along for an informal hour of great music. Hope to see you there.

See the Facebook group for more details.

Merton MCR Freshers Week 2010

Freshers week may have been a few weeks ago….but we are now only recovering and getting into the swing of full term!

MCR freshers week was a HUGE success…..it was bigger and better then ever before!

Not a day went by without a number of events….college tours, two cocktail parties, pub crawls, dinners out, welfare and parenting teas, brunches and boatie drinks, subject parties etc. etc. etc. but the crown and glory of the week had to be the Merton MCR Champagne Reception!

Champagne flowed all night, the Ferro Roche Towers were devoured, the men looked dashing in their black ties and the women were even more stunning then usual…….most importantly…life long friendships were made…all in the most beautiful venue you could possible imagine.

We were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the Freshers and hope they all had a freshers week that they will never forget!

:)

Oxford Climate Forum – applications open

Dear all,

Oxford Climate Forum is a student climate conference scheduled for 19th and 20th November 2010. Applications are open for delegates from varied fields, so visit  http://www.oxfordclimateforum.org/apply.html to apply.

The list of speakers is available here  http://www.oxfordclimateforum.org/delegate-information.html, and it is a very impressive line up!

The event is free, and will be held in the Oxford Union’s debating chamber, with dinner on the friday and breakfast on the saturday. The program indicates lots of opportunities for networking with your fellow delegates.

If anyone is thinking of going, let me know and perhaps we can get a group together.

x  Claire, your Environmental Rep
